Hyaluronic acid: a humectant step
Hyaluronic acid is commonly used as a humectant. A watery serum can add a light hydration layer, but it may not provide the cushioning or moisture-sealing feel of a cream. Many people get enough humectant support from a moisturizer and do not need a separate serum.
Squalane: lightweight emollient feel

How to choose without buying all three
Choose a ceramide cream when barrier-focused richness is your priority, a humectant serum when you specifically enjoy light layering, or a squalane product when softness and slip are the main appeal. A single well-formulated moisturizer can combine several of these roles and may be the most economical option.
